An open system is defined as a system which uses a set of communications protocols which are independent of manufacturers. The principle is that equipment from different manufacturers can co-exist and interoperate on the same communications bus.

This is without doubt the way forward, and has had the effect of driving down equipment prices whilst providing much greater flexibility and choice for the customer.
